On a daily basis you will
receive jokes, stories, political and religious philosophies,
meaningful quotes, virus warnings and all types of human interest
emails. There is a good chance you will receive the same emails
more than once! It seems that a few hundred make the cyberspace
rounds on a regular basis. Some I delete without ever opening
them and others I scan rather quickly before I exercise the power
given me when I click on "delete."
One of the human interest email stories I have received numerous
times is making the rounds again this year. You can be on watch
for it between now and early fall. It is about the life experience
or lack thereof of people entering college in this fall, the class
of 2005. They have never known a world without MTV. Until most
recently, they have only experienced one American President. The
only Pope they have ever known is John Paul II, who has been Pope
longer then they have been alive. The Persian Gulf War is practically
ancient history to them as are vinyl records. There must be another
twenty life experiences that focus on their world and what they
have and have not experienced. Each year I find this human-interest
article fascinating to read and contemplate.
Though time is constant (a second is a second, an hour an hour
never shorter, never longer), time seems to be moving more
quickly today. Life is changing rapidly. The enormously popular,
financially successful and futuristic ".com" business
world of just eighteen months ago has all but disappeared before
our very eyes. How many of us even heard to email just five short
years ago? This time last year there were not enough people available
fill all the needed jobs in our country. Today we keep hearing
about more and more layoffs and business restructurings.
It is no surprise then, that our society is experiencing a spiritual
hunger. And many of the hungry are you, young adults in your 20s
and 30s. Experiencing change at a record pace and living life
daily on the fast track, many of you are searching for and hungry
to absorb life experiences, virtues and values that are changeless.
Yours is a quest for meaning in a world of novelty. In a world
of broken dreams and promises, you are seeking a constant vision
for the future of your life and for all who alive rich
and poor, educated and ignorant, young and old, Christian, Muslim,
Jew, Serb, Croat, Iraqi, Columbian, Cuban, Chinese. It matters
not who or where.
Enter the world of religion, faith and spirituality. Enter the
enduring world of Roman Catholicism. Enter the world of Theology-on-Tap.
Enter the world of Young Adult Ministry.
Older than the class of 2005, Theology-on-Tap 2001 is an opportunity
for you to connect with the world of the Lord Jesus. Theology-on-Tap
is your four-week opportunity to tap into the world of meaning,
the virtues of love and justice, the experiences of forgiveness
and everlasting life promised us by the Lord Jesus and kept alive
as a dream to be fulfilled and a promise to be realize for all
of Gods people.
Within these pages you will find several hundred opportunities
for you, as a young adult believer and seeker, to have your spiritual
hunger fed and your quest for meaning, virtue and value rewarded.
Over 60 parishes and Catholic centers from five separate Dioceses
and Archdioceses, are simultaneously dedicating four weeks to
you from July 8th through August 5th.
You are invited to join over 3000 of your peers who, each week,
will attend one of the Theology-on-Tap sessions printed here.
On Sunday, August 5th, Francis Cardinal George invites you to
Mass in Holy Name Cathedral when 1400 young adults will gather
to celebrate Eucharist. After Mass, the festivities continue on
the lawn of the Cardinals residence as we enjoy a picnic,
socializing and dancing into the early evening.
Speaking of email, you might want to email your young adult friends
and tell them about Theology-on-Tap. If they havent received
this newsletter, direct them to this web site. You even might
want to invite them to join you at Theology-on-Tap this summer!
