Chicago HOPES
Volunteer as a Tutor with Chicago
HOPES!
Chicago HOPES is an initiative of the Chicago
Public Schools Homeless Education Program that empowers homeless
students to succeed academically. With the goal of sustainability,
we collaborate with schools, shelters, and communities to establish
shelter-based, after-school tutoring and cultural enrichment opportunities.
This educational support, provided by committed and caring volunteers,
will help students to break the cycle of homelessness that threatens
their futures and communities.
Volunteer “Job Description”
Tutoring and mentoring children with unstable living arrangements
can be a challenging but rewarding experience. Most of the students
participating in Chicago HOPES are elementary school-aged and are
performing well below their grade level as a result of their homelessness.
It will be your job to assist up to three students at a time with
homework and other pre-determined activities. Because tutoring will
become one of the few consistent things in the lives of the homeless
children, we ask for a minimum commitment of one tutoring session
per week for the length of one semester. There is no need to worry
about your own academic credentials or lack of tutoring experience!
Chicago HOPES tutors need only be genuinely enthusiastic and ready
to make a strong commitment. You will be provided with tutoring
activities and strategies at a Chicago HOPES orientation session
and will be offered support and guidance throughout your tutoring
experience.

Chicago HOPES Training
As a volunteer tutor with Chicago HOPES, you will
be expected to attend one training opportunity before you begin
working with our students. This session will provide an overview
of our program, an introduction to the issues and challenges faced
by homeless students, and some basic techniques and strategies for
effective tutoring. We will be offering training throughout the
fall at one of two locations:
North Side – Lincoln Park Branch Library
(1150 W. Fullerton)
Wed., Sept. 12 from 3 - 5 pm
Thurs., Sept. 20 from 3 - 5 pm
October and November dates are still pending. Only one of our five
