The Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1146-1152 & 1189, teaches that “a sacramental celebration is woven from signs and symbols,” and that these symbols are drawn from creation, human life, Jewish life, and the life of Christ. This session will reflect on that fourfold interweaving in some of the central sacramental symbols – such as the use of water, oil, and bread and wine – and on their meaning as bearers of the saving action of Christ.
1. Choose a central sacramental symbol. How do you use that created element (water, oil, bread, wine) in your ordinary human life, and what does it mean to you? Can you identify how the meaning of that human use has been transformed in Jewish life, and then how its meaning was transformed even further in the life of Jesus?
2. How can that meaning be experienced more fully in liturgy? How can it be carried out into Christian life and witness in today’s world?
